Dominique Wilkinson

Dominique Wilkinson is a Caribbean-born fashion designer who has chosen to expand her creative knowledge by delving into textiles and accessories. As a designer who thrives on learning how to make unconventional materials work on garments, this course seemed to be a good choice to assist her with this. The fabrics used in the fashion industry have had rules for centuries but the unconventional material choices have become a strong design language for her. The fashion in the collection WomXn tells the story of how the body of the Caribbean woman is viewed bringing Jamaican and Georgian aspects together. The resin and animalistic aspects bring the slave culture and purity of the Georgian era together to create underwater sculptures and a bullnose mouthpiece. Using unconventional techniques with materials such as metal, glass, resin, and clay was a way to see through the pieces while creating soft water-like shapes to see the body through. This is another prominent part of her work; the female body. As we move towards embracing their feminine energy, loving themselves, and not seeking male validation. All elements which play a huge part in her work are culture, materials, and the female body. Moving forward she hopes to grow more as she combines these 3 elements and experiments more with materials and learning herself better.
