Emma Whitehurst
Emma is a third-year fashion design student at Ravensbourne University London specialising in menswear. Emma completed an Art Foundation course, following this she studied fashion design. During her first year, she expanded her manufacturing knowledge and skills and found that this excited her becoming the focus of all her work. Emma finds influences from all over the world to develop her concepts. During her second-year team denim project, she focused on the Japanese culture and craftsmanship of Boro, using this technique throughout the project which ensured the garments were long-lasting. Emma has a strong interest in the environment, she believes in looking to traditional approaches towards fashion, slowing down fashion, producing less overall, making timeless beautiful garments that will live with a person forever. During her work experience at Lutwyche, a bespoke tailor producing hand-crafted luxury suits. Emma gained experience in pattern cutting, tailoring and further developing her skills in hand stitching finishes. When exploring her final Collection concept Emma found a fascination with the human body and how within the body everything has a function and purpose. She explored the idea of how the body subconsciously reacts to emotions and the reasons for this. Emma explored this through hand embroidery translating the feelings that are felt during emotions such as anxiety and nervousness. Interpreting these to garments that make the wearer feel confident.
