Lucy Garland

Integrating prop making, photography, styling, and creative direction into her work, Lucy Garland (a fashion promotion student) communicates and raises awareness of cultural and societal issues within the world around us.

Her final major project aimed to bring light to the struggles of mixed identities and create an empowering community for biracial and minority groups. Lucy explores her heritage and childhood memories using eccentric prop making and journal entries as a form of emotional release.

BLENDED zine is a vibrant visualization of Lucy’s story which follows the narrative of the ugly duckling finding their identity and place in the world, something many mixed-race people can relate to. Coming from a fine art background, her work commonly features hand-painted backdrops, illustrations, and props made from found objects such as coat hangers, tissue paper, string, and skewer sticks. Each photoshoot features a character representing the varying stages of Lucy's identity.

"I hope to visually express my cultural background and creativity whilst staying relevant and informed on our ever-changing society. The freedom of expressing my fine art influences through photography and design keeps me inspired and excited for the future"
