Sophie Ward

Combining animation, film and performance, Sophie uses surrealism and dark humour to communicate storylines full of deeper meanings. “My love for animation comes with its ability to create things that are impossible in real life. It gives you a sense of freedom that no other medium can”. On fashion promotion, she found her specialism in stop motion animation which allowed her to create characters and stories and bring to life inanimate objects. Within this, she experimented with set design, and costume design, going on to making her own props. Starring in her own films, Sophie’s interest in theatre and performance art is explored through handmade paper mâché masks and props often representing characters or symbols in her narrative. One of her main inspirations was the Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, known for his disturbing, nightmarish short films.

Sophie’s final major project stems from her Grandparent’s survival of the Holocaust, an experience that undoubtedly shaped her family’s mindset and outlook on life. Her collection of short films takes you on her family’s journey, exploring the persecution of Jews during the 1940s. This is a story of sadness pain and suffering, but most importantly of survival and resilience. Throughout this project, she continued to push herself with the introduction of prop making, green screens, special effects and sound design to create an eerie and surreal narrative of this journey to freedom.
