Yue Qing Wei

Yue Qing Wei is a London-based multidisciplinary womenswear fashion designer and creative director informed in commercial awareness and business orientation. Over the three years of her fashion design course, she has developed a creative approach towards draping and pattern cutting that is highly influenced by her experiences as a Chinese-Canadian. Having to live in different countries gave her exposure to all different cultures, forming her interest in many pathways. Her two major interests are drawing and dancing. She enjoys the movements and fluidity the human body can express through speed, levels, strength, and energy. This made her especially interested in the Synergy between the human body and garment, expressed through fashion. She is also fascinated by the difference between sensible brush strokes of Chinese ink and blocky techniques of western painting. These different techniques in interpretation help her see a garment differently in shape, weight, and structure. She has also been engaged within critical and philosophical thinking over her interests in books and films, which pushes her to develop her work in more depth with the support of solid research.

Fatal Flaw Look 1
Fatal Flaw Look 1Ancient greek tales are known for their appealing storylines and tragic heroes. In Greek mythology, one of the major causes of their tragic fate would be hamartia. In Greek, hamartia means no matter where you go, there you are. You cannot escape your personality. There are elements of ourselves from which we simply cannot escape. This would suggest that hamartia can be seen as "layered", like an onion: on the surface, fate seems beyond one's control, but on a deeper scale, it could be changed through our personalities and character traits, yet it is still largely dependant on luck and our inheritance of other people's choices. We cannot choose the era we are born in nor can we choose the kind of family we were born into. These are all important elements that help develop one's personality and mold one's characteristics. We are not in control of many things, yet we still have the right and ability to fight against our destined paths. This project is to honour tragic heroines: those women who were not born at the right time, family, health conditions yet still carried on fighting their way through their unfortunate destinies.
